I work in a medical office, and run our electronic health record client software and Dragon Medical on a Windows 7 tablet, which I carry from room to room. I would like a handsfree over-the-ear wireless microphone that would connect directly to the tablet, so that I can dictate while moving about the office. I'm guessing bluetooth would be the best option, as the tablet has a built-in-bluetooth adapter. Fidelity is important, since I obviously want to achieve the highest accuracy.
The Sennheiser BW900 is the highest-rated wireless BT headset on Dragon's compatibility list, but Dragon's site describes the use of cables to attach the headset's base to the PC, which obviously is not an option since I carry the PC around with me.
My question is, does the BW900 in fact connect directly to the PC via BT without the use of any cables, or is there another option which is more suitable for my needs? Thanks.

Everyone would like a cute little, unobtrusive, over-the-ear, long battery life microphone. Here are the facts:

  • Bluetooth audio is of a low quality. The only Bluetooth microphone we will recommend is the VXI Xpressway. The engineers have reworked the Bluetooth to sample at a higher quality that makes it close to what speech recognition software needs.
  • The best wireless microphone technology uses radio frequency (RF). The very best microphone in this category is the Samson Airline 77. This would not work for you as requires a small receiver be connected to your computer and an AC outlet.
  • The Sennheiser BW 900 will work with your home built-in-bluetooth on the tablet PC. However, it will not home yield as high accuracy has the VXI Xpressway due to a lower audio sampling rate. Home home as you have already surmised, to use it as a radio frequency microphone you would need the base charging unit which also needs to be connected to the computer and to the wall outlet. In addition, the BW 900 will be discontinued within the next several months at most.

At this point it sounds like the VXI Xpressway is your best bet. And should work quite well as long as you enunciate clearly and speak in phrases.
