Questions on Computers

1. How do I create a permanent paging file?

Answer:

Configuring a permanent swap file, sometimes called a paging file, allows speech recognition software programs to send information out to the disk when it runs out of physical RAM memory. To set this up follow the following procedures:

  1. Perform a Defrag. This ensures that the permanent swap file is placed in a contiguous single area of the hard drive. Start button, Programs, Accessories, Sytem Tools, Disk Defragmenter.
  2. Open Control Panel
  3. Double-click the System icon.
  4. Select the Advanced tab.
  5. Click the button that says Settings in Performance.
  6. Clck the Advanced tab in Performance Options
  7. Click the button that says Change in the Virtual Memory area.
  8. Set the Initial and Maximum size to 1024.
  9. Reboot the computer in order for it to set up the permanent swap file.

2. I am using a Pentium 4 2GHz notepad computer running Windows XP with 512 MB RAM. I have noticed that after a while of dictating to Word or the speak pad I suddenly am not able to do any corrections through the correction window. I try putting the computer to sleep, waking it up, even re-dictating the text but I simply cannot do any correcting of mistakes. This seems to be after a long while of dictating or using my computer.

Answer:

I tend to start my SR softwares only when needed and close them when finished. I've found both Dragon and ViaVoice if left open for long periods of time or used continuously start to slow down. If not closed and reopened they will crash even though you have beaucoup CPU/RAM. Here are my suggestions for running smoothly:

  1. Use a stable and multi threaded OS like Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP.
  2. Run Checkdisk/scandisk and Defrag daily if you use your SR software heavily.
  3. Start SR software only when needed and close when finished.
  4. Make sure you have a permanent paging file (swapfile). If yours is not permanent, first perform the Checkdisk and Defrag. Set the minimum and maximum size to 384 Meg (the reason why this size is just that it seems to work on every computer I've tried it on). Then restart the computer to configure the paging file.
  5. Turn the microphone off during even a few minutes break in dictation. If left on, it is looking at any sounds it hears to see if they are words.
  6. Use a good sound card (SoundBlaster Live or Audigy) or USB sound pod and a good microphone. If sound input is not pure, it puts an extra load on system resources.
